Noisevember — Recording a sound a day for the month of November

Off to Hawaii this morning for nine days of sun, so I'm not sure yet about getting sound up here. Will keep you posted.

Just a quiet morning around home yesterday...

The snow clearing machines were out in City square as the 9:35 A.M. train went by in the background.

This sound is from a video recording I did with my iPod while out for a walk in the snow. The visuals aren't much better either!

Who knew that gas fireplaces need regular maintenance? Oh sure, and next you're going to tell me to change the oil in my car every 5,000 KM.

Glen and Bill from South Island Fireplace (yes, plugs are free on this site — but the maintenance sure wasn't) stopped by and in a very organized fashion brought their tools and tarps up and went to work on the fireplace.

About a half an hour later, the flame burns blue, and yellow and orange.

And you're not alone, I can't understand what they're saying either. Fireplace speak.

It didn't take long for us to get the hang again of that much loved and played card game, Continentale. Many humid nights in Costa Rica and Guatemala were spent honing our skills at collecting trios and escaleras, but it was Aaron who got back on the saddle and rode to victory — although Steve took this particular hand and Penny wasn't too happy about having to count the remaining cards in her's. Penny and Steve joined us for a game after a delicious meal of their home-cooked Indian food.

I don't know where my sound went. It's not on the recorder! It was of a recyclist in action.

Ending the Silence, a documentary film on youth caregiving premiered at the Duncan Garage Showroom on Wednesday afternoon. The Youth Caregivers Project is backed by the Cowichan Family Caregivers Support Society and is a wonderful project organized by courageous and motivated youth.

Noisevember 16

Today Bruce Springsteen released new material. If you buy the whole package it includes something like three CD's, three DVD's and his scrapbook from the writing and recording of Darkness on the Edge of Town back in 1977/'78. I got the 21 new songs on "The Promise". They're new as in these versions are previously unreleased on a studio album, most of them not released at all. It's confusing so I stopped reading about it and just listened instead.

This song stands out as my favourite from today, "One Way Street".

Played out of iTunes, recorded in Audio Hijack and edited in Adobe Audition (oh yah, the Mac beta version!!). It is a recording!

Nothing wanted to be recorded today. I even went out for a walk tonight and made my way towards a wind chime swinging wildly, only to have it stop chiming as I stood in front of it. Excuses excuses. Tomorrow is a new day.

The first day recording didn't happen! I had a plan to record something from the Imax showing of Inception, but was so lost on the big screen I completely forgot. I'll get you something good to make up for it.

A few days later and here it is — one of the BEST sounds. So good I can almost taste it. After french press I could never go back to drip.

On Saturday night we went to Bruce and Leslie's fabulous new home in Cobble Hill for a visit. While many laughs from the night could have been recorded, I went instead with the en route rumblings of our sweet ride.

Such an emotionally charged sound, it inspired a rock ballad.

There is only one sound to capture on Remembrance Day — a moment of silence.

But that wouldn't keep you around very long, so I thought part of the Duncan Remembrance Day ceremony might.

The moment of silence appearing in the original recording has been altered to fit this format (from two minutes to ten seconds).

I swear I'll leave the house tomorrow and get a sound not connected to my immediate living space. But today, today I just had to put up this one. What's Anna Maria Tremonti saying? Oh that's right, she's saying my name.

While we've had some sunny days, November tends to be the wettest month (remember the floods last year?) and with the rain comes cooler temps. It dropped down to about 6 or 7 degrees today and the nights are colder. The smell of wood stoves fills the fall air and it's time for us to join the ranks of the heated.

Aaron turns the pilot light on and gets the gas fireplace going.

I've come out from underneath my headphones to post Monday's sound a day late.

My man makes music from a mason jar full of water and his organic mouth organ.

It's worse than the leaf blower, and appeared on a Sunday! A Sunday! This particular Sunday I was in the closet studio trying to voice the narration for the upcoming documentary, "Crossing The Line" — hear it Wednesday November 10th on CBC's The Current. Early into recording this abrasive noise brought things to a halt. The City of Duncan had a few trees cut down (right down, I know!) and the tree chipper was there to do away with the remains.

Warning: some listeners may find this sound hostile to their ears..

Without prodding, an enthusiastic Aaron cheers on the Vancouver Canucks as they sneak another past Jimmy Howard of the Detroit Red Wings. The goal by Manny Malhotra gave the Canucks a 6-4 lead, which they'd take to the end and win the game.

You're hearing a true fan over-the-moon about his team's success.

The urban rooster is back!

City workers carrying gas powered leaf blowers on their backs arrive Friday mornings to save the square from fall leaves. This morning their important work started at 7:12.

There's always tomorrow for a sleep-in. Oh wait, it's market day...

I had another sound in mind for today and was holding out for it until about 15 minutes ago. This is a late addition, but it's full of sound.

And I'm glad I have myself on tape doing it. Proof.

I spent part of this warm, sunny day with the french doors open and my chair right up against the railing to catch the sun. With the documentary scheduled to air in one week, my headphones were tight against my ears for editing. I'm polishing up the intro and here's what I heard, a lot.

This was recorded playing through my headphones. Was the recorder up my nose?

Noisevember 2

The day's schedule kept me close to home with a few excursions in the sun, so without having to venture too far, today's sound is from a familiar place for us.

I won't keep you guessing at our purchases! They include: coffee and I can't remember what else. Coffee was really the only important item. And toothpaste was in there, too. Second on the list in order of importance.

Noisevember — Recording a sound a day for the month of November

It's not really noise, but I needed to come up with a clever title for my blog. Only, I couldn't come up with one, so Aaron has given us Noisevember.

For the month of November I'm recording a new sound each day and posting it here. It's a creative challenge! There's no sound discrimination, no parameters put on what gets recorded, the sound could come from anywhere, or anything around me.

Today's sound is...picking Swiss chard from my garden. It was delicious with dinner.
